An ankle fracture may involve two joints of the ankle:
- Ankle joint – where the tibia, fibula, and talus meet
- Syndesmosis joint – the joint between the tibia and fibula
Causes:
- Fall
- Twisting injuries
- Road traffic accident
Symptoms
- Pain,
- Swelling
- Inability to stand or walk
- Lack of movement
- Joint deformity
Treatment
Non-Surgical
Undisplaced fractures especially old people are treated in conservatively
- Immobilization – cast
- Medication – analgesics
Surgical
Displaced fractures and compound fractures are treated surgically
- Open reduction and internal fixation with Screws, Plates and Wires.
