Foot & Ankle Fractures

An ankle fracture may involve two joints of the ankle:

  • Ankle joint – where the tibia, fibula, and talus meet
  • Syndesmosis joint – the joint between the tibia and fibula
Causes:
  • Fall
  • Twisting injuries
  • Road traffic accident
Symptoms
  • Pain,
  • Swelling
  • Inability to stand or walk
  • Lack of movement
  • Joint deformity
  • X-rays
  • CT scan
  • MRI
Treatment
Non-Surgical

Undisplaced fractures especially old people are treated in conservatively

  • Immobilization – cast
  • Medication – analgesics
Surgical

Displaced fractures and compound fractures are treated surgically

  • Open reduction and internal fixation with Screws, Plates and Wires.
