What is viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation is a procedure to treat arthritic pain of the knee, when all the non-surgical treatment methods fail to relieve pain. People with osteoarthritis are depleted of hyaluronic acid in their joints. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the synovial fluid of the joint
Viscosupplementation involves injecting hyaluronic acid into joint space. This acts as a shock absorber and lubricant which enables the bones of the joint to glide smoothly over each other. This is an effective procedure that:
- Relieves pain
- Improves joint function
- Stimulates the body to produce more of its own hyaluronic acid.
One to five shots of hyaluronic acid are given over several weeks, depending on the product used and its effect lasts for several months.
